Last Tuesday, I woke up at 3:50 in the morning to Nolan's loud cry and Mike's angery voice. I hurried to the stairs. Mike had Nolan in his arms and said "go see what he's done downstairs". I realized Nolan must have woken up in the middle of the night and sneaked downstairs to do something mischievous. He was sobbing and screaming, obviously being scolded by Mike already. I decided to put him in bed first and clean up later.
After rocking him to sleep, I went downstairs and was in shock.
He didn't play with the vacuum or steal crackers from the pantry; instead, he made this! It was a big pot just incase you can't tell from the picture.
The kitchen counter got so disorganized. When I put everything back, I figered out what the midnight concoction was made of:
They are: a bottle of extra virgin olive oil, a bottle of soy sauce, a big jar of brown sugar (full, just put a bag in), a small jar of white sugar, a bottle of cayenne pepper, a bottle of white pepper, plus kids' favorite (drum roll please) sprinkles!
I poured his "soup" into the sink and was so thankful he didn't spill everything on the wood floor. At the bottom of the soup (other than a thick layer of sugar) were... I was scared to death. BTW, the drawers all have child-safe locks.
Nolan has always loved playing with the toy kitchen. Maybe this is something he's been dying to do for a long time? Mike asked me if he was sleep walking and required medical attention. He couldn't believe a 3-year-old would do this in the middle of the night.
I don't think so. It was a planned event, not temporary insanity.
P.S. we later took extra measures to make sure he stays upstairs even if he wakes up in the middle of the night. The kitchen is now double checked before bed time.
