I've been dying to post something about thrifting, so let this be the first.
Old things have always been inspiring to me. When I was 14, I got my first thrifting treasure from a very old street vendor. It was an old cow bell which cost me $400 NT dollars (worth a month of allowance). When I came to the the States for study, I was in heaven. All the garage sales, rummage sales and antique markets (plus ebay) kept me from going insane from the pressure at school.
Last weekend, I strolled into the thrift store near my house, just like any other day. But as I glanced through the strollers, my heart skipped a beat. Is it an...Could it be? I held my breath and kneeled down to check the chrome chassis. YES! It's an Emmaljunga duo! Emmaljungas are amazing prams from Sweden which haven't been distributed in the US since 2000-2001. Most single Emmas cost about $660 (plus shipping). From the white tires and the fabrics, it is probably from 1999 (newer Emmas have black tires and a sportier look).
A good, reliable double is what I need for taking long walks with Maya and Nolan. It will work great at the zoo, too. I tried to contain my excitement and gave the Emma a quick check. It appeared to be in great condition. It took me a while to get used to the fixed front wheels. And after getting help from 6 nice people at the store, we finally figured out how to fold the stroller (it was quite easy, acutally). But before hoisting this 50's Chevy-big beauty home, I needed to test drive it first with 2 kids, just to make sure.
Later that day, Mike went to the store with me to give it a final check. I put Maya and Nolan in and started cruising in the store. Just as I was about to go to the check out, the store announced "All strollers are 60% off this evening!". Yay! I almost did a cartwheel in the store (if I could). The happy ending? An Emmaljunga duo for $20! Thank you, stroller goddess!
